How Long Do Fillings Last?

Did you know that 92 percent of adults aged 20-64 have had at least one cavity? With a number that high, chances are many of them have needed a filling. But what many people may not realize is that fillings don’t last forever. Here’s a closer look at the different types of fillings available, and how long you can expect each of them to last.

Amalgam (Silver)

Amalgam (silver) fillings can last up to 15 years. Despite their color, they aren’t pure silver. They’re made from a mixture of different metals, including silver, copper, tin and mercury. Thankfully, the type of mercury used cannot get in your bloodstream, but many dentists have stopped using them because patients can be allergic to them.

Gold

Gold fillings are the most expensive and the longest-lasting. These durable restorations can survive for up to 30 years with proper care. Though they are not usually made of pure gold (they may have copper or other metals mixed in), they can still cost ten times more than the least expensive type of filling!

Porcelain

Porcelain fillings are the second most expensive type of filling and can last up to ten years. They are considered more durable than composite fillings and are sometimes used for the back teeth. They also blend in well with the natural teeth and even resist staining, making them a better choice for cosmetic reasons than using gold or silver.

Composite

Composite fillings are the most common and most affordable filling available today. They are made with a mixture of resin and glass or quartz particles and can last from five to seven years. Like porcelain restorations, they feel natural and blend in with the rest of your teeth, but they aren’t as durable as other restorations and typically need to be replaced sooner.

Remember, no matter which type of dental filling you choose, you can expect it to last for many years with proper care and usage. While different restorations will vary in cost, longevity, and appearance, you can rest assured that each option will protect your teeth from further decay and damage. If you have any questions or concerns about which type is best for you, speak to your dentist for more information.
