What Is CEREC?
CEREC stands for “Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic.” Basically, that means that these crowns are comprised of a block of pressed ceramic materials, allowing them to be created in only one hour-long appointment. You won’t have to wear a temporary crown and return to our dental office several weeks later while your permanent crown is being crafted in a dental lab. CEREC is essentially its own dental lab right here in our office!
How Does the CEREC Process Work?
To get your same-day crown in Arlington Heights, we first start by taking detailed impressions of your affected tooth. We do this not with messy putty-like material but with a digital scanner that allows us to take perfect 3D images. After our computer has designed a replica of your tooth, right down to the color and shape, the attached milling machine will carve a copy to make a crown out of a single block of pressed ceramic. This process only takes about an hour. Once the machine is finished, one of our dentists will securely attach it to your tooth, and voila! Your new tooth is ready to go!
Benefits of CEREC Compared to Traditional Dental Crowns
CEREC in Arlington Heights offers so many advantages over the traditional dental crown process, such as:
- CEREC’s digital camera eliminates the need for messy, sticky putty to make impressions.
- The whole process only takes one appointment and should last slightly over an hour. You don’t have to take time out of your busy life to make two visits to our dental office.
- Your crown will perfectly mimic your natural tooth, right down to the way light reflects off of it.
- There is no need to wear a temporary crown, which can be uncomfortable, or break or become dislodged easily.
- On average, CEREC crowns can last 10-15 years, but if you take care of them with regular brushing, flossing, and checkups, then their lifespan can be even longer.
CEREC® Same-Day Dental Crowns FAQs
Does Getting a CEREC® Same-Day Dental Crown Hurt?
It’s very common for patients to be worried that the dental care they need will come with some discomfort. The good news is that your mouth will be numbed before we intervene with any necessary restorative care. Plus, our Arlington Heights dental team will provide you with aftercare instructions to help prevent any soreness from surfacing in the hours or days following your appointment. That starts with not chewing on that side of your mouth for the first 24 hours and taking OTC pain medication as needed (following the directions on the label).
Will I Need a Temporary Dental Crown?
With traditional dental crowns, a temporary one needs to be cemented in place for two or three weeks (or however long it takes for your final restoration to be made). The same cannot be said for CEREC® same-day crowns! As the name suggests, we’ll be able to complete the entire process in a single visit – from providing the necessary restorative care to securing your dental crown in place. That means less time in the treatment chair, fewer appointments, and no hassle!
How Long Do CEREC® Same-Day Dental Crowns Last?
Your dental crown can last for well over a decade if you care for it properly! Don’t worry – that doesn’t require any special dental tools or a cumbersome oral hygiene regimen. Instead, you simply need to commit to good habits, like brushing for a full two minutes twice a day and flossing each morning or evening. It’s also important that you wear a mouthguard during sports, avoid using tobacco products, and keep your consumption of added sugar to a minimum.
Are CEREC® Same-Day Dental Crowns More Expensive?
You might assume that dental crowns using CEREC® are more expensive because they utilize state-of-the-art technology. However, they often end up being comparable in price. That’s because a temporary dental crown doesn’t need to be made and there isn’t a need for two or more visits to our office. If you are interested in getting an estimate of the cost of each, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us! We’d be happy to provide you with further information on the topic once we know a bit more about your dental needs.
Does Dental Insurance Cover CEREC® Same-Day Dental Crowns?
It’s important to note first that dental plans vary from patient to patient. Plus, there is always red tape to consider, like waiting periods and annual maximums. That’s why it’s crucial that you review the fine print on yours (or ask our team for help if you need some assistance understanding the unfamiliar jargon). With that said, many dental insurance providers do cover a portion of the cost of CEREC® same-day dental crowns!
